Final poster design

This festival aims to inspire and showcase the creativity of student filmmakers world wide. It is an open festival with no set boundaries; we actively encourage new styles, voices and direction. This is your chance to submit your film(s) and gain an opportunity to showcase your talents at Dirigo. Entries are open from the 10th of October 2018*.

Dirigo is directed and produced by FdA Film & Media Arts Production students from University Centre Weston.

*Entries closed as of 30th January 2019.

Dirigo Film Festival was curated this year by myself and my six 2nd year peers. We were all delegated our own primary roles throughout the lead up and running of the festival; I myself was appointed the role of Lead Design. This meant that I was responsible to carry out the following tasks.

  • Assisting logo and poster design

  • Film Selecting

  • Making trailers for social media

Firstly, every year of the festival's running the students who curate it have a tradition of redesigning the theme of the festival; changing up the colour scheme and reimagining the logo, providing that it still sticks to a clapperboard style. I advised Marketing Manger Craig with the logo creation and we came up with a few drafts before the final version you see above was decided upon. All drafts of the logo are seen below.

In addition to assisting with the logo design, I was put in charge of selecting the colour scheme of the promotional material. Initially I had thought to design the posters etc with a combination of blue and pink like such.

However, I decided that picking one single colour and having a few to choose from would be a much better decision making process. Myself and Craig crafted a draft version of the poster you see above with the minimum information and gave it a few different choices of colour, as seen below.

By majority vote, yellow was considered the most eye-grabbing colour from the selection.

Though Nathan was mainly responsible for selecting the submissions, all of the crew took their own hand in picking their favourites, writing reviews and rating films. A few of my favourites were the following:

  • Dreamlife, Yalan Hu

  • Dear Amir, Ian Bagley

  • Doll It Up, Alessandro Montalbano Gucciardo

The selection process itself was performed on FilmFreeway which was the submission platform we used. The way it worked is that you would select a film, watch it through and use the rating box below to score the film and give it certain recommendations.

Lastly, my main role throughout the process of the arranging of the festival was to edit together numerous trailers to be posted on social media. The trailers featured clips of films from the previous years selection and all of the information needed for people to submit their films or purchase tickets to the event. Due to the fact that we didn't know initially where we'd be hosting the festival, earlier versions of the trailer wrote "South West, England".

Later trailers were updated to show the date and location of the event, as seen below.

On top of these edits, I had to provide our Social Media Manager with some cropped and shortened versions of the trailer so that she could upload them to Instagram. They can be seen below.
